Belouch (Baluchi)
Many of the Belouch tribes are still nomads, and they roam throughout eastern Iran, western Pakistan and Afghanistan. Iranian Belouch rugs are woven in and around the city of Meshed in the northeast Iran. Meshed serves as their collection centre. The designs of these rugs are always geometric. The most common patterns are tree of life, prayer rug, and the classic Bokhara pattern of columns of octagonal guls. All these designs are worked in dark shades of red, blue and brown with camel and ivory accents. In fact, somber colours are one easy way to recognise Belouch rugs.
Iranian Belouchs are worked in Persian knots on cotton warps and are usually hard wearing. Their quality can range from coarse to medium. The best will have up to 100 knots per square inch. Iranian Belouchs are usually no larger than 6×4 ft.
Belouch rugs made in Afghanistan are often collected in the city of Herat. These rugs are woven on wool foundations in traditional designs similar to those found in Iranian Beloucs. Generally, they are more closely woven than their Iranian counterparts, with a shorter pile. They too are normally made in small sizes, although coarsely woven larger carpets do appear on occasion.
